Where the Music Sleeps
Instead of repairing the piano to restore its old sound, I imagined filling its broken body with still water. I thought of water as a medium that holds remaining memories and resonates again, rather than erasing wounds.
I drew the grand piano holding dark water and the cat above it with dense pen lines. I placed a solid instrument and flowing water, a body that has lost sound and a resonance that might spread in ripples, within one scene.
I worked carefully on the cover as a drawing in its own right, not merely an image advertising the single. I differentiated keys, curved surfaces and the lid through line density, leaving the water dark and still. I used the cat and reflections to draw the eye into the piano.
I made the music by translating the finished drawing’s atmosphere and feelings into sound. I wanted the piano to resonate like a quiet presence beside someone, rather than offer easy words of comfort.
