Why Bring Art into an Everyday Screen
liwall is a macOS live-wallpaper project that brings my images and moving scenes into the everyday desktop. I wanted the work to remain in the background each time I turn on a screen, and to feel a little different with the hour and the work taking place above it.
To me, a wallpaper is not a small copy of an artwork. When an image I might view once and close becomes a space I meet repeatedly, even a familiar scene can change its distance and mood.
I thought there could be another kind of time with a work beyond an exhibition or a single image. As I turn on a computer, open a document, or briefly clear the windows, the picture in the background enters my view again and again. I made liwall for those short, repeated encounters.
Using a work as a background should not reduce it to decoration. A moving image needs to keep its own sense of time; a still image needs to retain its light and open space. I adjust elements such as the clock or snow so they can make a living scene with the work instead of covering it.
